Turning Vision into Lasting Impact

Economic development is about more than creating plans—it's about turning ideas into lasting community impact.

Last summer, the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) partnered with the City of Grinnell, Grinnell Area Chamber of Commerce, and Poweshiek Development to complete a Downtown Assessment. The assessment identified opportunities to strengthen downtown, including creating welcoming public gathering spaces, activating alleys, expanding public art, and enhancing the overall visitor experience. While the vision was clear, one important question remained: How would these community improvements be funded?

Working alongside community partners, Poweshiek Development helped explore a solution that would create a long-term funding source for downtown improvements.

That solution became Prairie Thrift.

Established as an independent nonprofit, Prairie Thrift was created with a simple but powerful mission: to collect items from the community, for the community. Every donation and every purchase helps generate resources that are reinvested into projects that strengthen downtown Grinnell, creating vibrant public spaces, supporting community connections, and enhancing downtown vitality.

The community's response has been encouraging. During Prairie Thrift's first month, the store welcomed approximately 2,600 visits from more than 2,200 unique visitors, with shoppers spending an average of 45 minutes in the store. Saturdays quickly became the busiest day of the week, demonstrating strong community support while increasing activity throughout downtown.

Today, Prairie Thrift represents more than a successful nonprofit. It is a sustainable funding model that will help advance the vision outlined in the Downtown Assessment. Whether supporting inviting public gathering spaces, activating underutilized areas, enhancing public art, or investing in other community improvements, every purchase and donation contributes to the long-term vitality of downtown Grinnell. For Poweshiek Development, this project reflects our approach to economic development: identifying opportunities, working collaboratively to develop innovative solutions, and helping create long-term assets that strengthen our communities. Prairie Thrift is an example of how strategic partnerships can transform a community vision into lasting impact.
