In 2005, Poweshiek Area Development was established to foster growth, innovation, and prosperity in Poweshiek County. In 2010, we rebranded to Poweshiek Iowa Development (Pow I-80) to better reflect our mission and focus on economic development along the Interstate 80 corridor.
When 2020 hit and COVID-19 was at its peak, hiring slowed significantly, economic development was hit and the uncertainty about the future was widespread.
A little over 2 years ago, our journey began when a county wide group of stakeholders came together convened initially by Delphina Baumann, current board member. Our big ask was “What could economic development in Poweshiek County look like if we truly worked together?”
Recognizing the vital role of collaboration, our framework is built upon a shared vision, a common agenda, and unified metrics for county-wide economic development. This collective approach has enabled us to align our goals and measure our progress effectively. By working together, we've created a cohesive strategy that leverages the strengths and resources of all stakeholders throughout the county.
In 2024, Poweshiek Iowa Development (Pow I-80) relaunched with renewed vigor and a strategic vision for the future. The organization boasts an exceptional, dedicated board. Many of whom are here tonight. Their collaborative efforts have been instrumental in relaunching the organization.
A significant milestone in this relaunch was the hiring of Dan Nieland as the new Executive Director, who has met with numerous business and industry leaders across the county to hear first-hand about their needs and aspirations. The board has been busy, we’ve approved a strategic plan and developed a new brand, which will be unveiled tonight. Several exciting projects have been initiated, including downtown assessments for Brooklyn, Grinnell and Montezuma and efforts to assist businesses in securing grants for necessary improvements.
We are excited about the future with each of you. In the coming months we will be working toward establishing working groups, creating an ecosystem of collaborative partnerships. These working groups will focus on specific areas of development outlined in our strategic plan. Ensuring that our efforts are unified across the county.
